대만의 블로그 열풍, 한국은?!


2005년 3월 29일, Taipei에서 열린 Taiwan Blogger BoF에 keynote speaker로 다녀오면서 대만의 블로그 열풍을 몸소 체험할 기회가 있었다. (행사 블로그는 삭제되어서 아쉽게도 링크를 할 수가 없다. 하지만 당시 현장의 모습을 담은 사진들은 볼 수 있다. 물론 내 예전 블로그에 가면 관련정보들이 남아있지만, 예전 블로그는 비밀로 숨겨두고 싶다. :p) BoF라는 이름으로 수백명의 사람들이 모일 수 있다는 것도 놀라웠고, 또한 한국의 blogosphere에 대해서 소개하는 내 발표를 잘 이해한다는 듯 적극적으로 고개를 끄덕이는 사람들의 모습은 신기할 정도였다. 이해의 끄덕임이 아니라 공감의 끄덕임 같았기 때문이다. 이 많은 사람들이 모두 적극적인 블로거란 말인가?! (당시 한국은 수백명의 블로거들이 offline으로 모여들 수준이 아니었다. online에서는 활발했지만.)

나는 그 해 여름에 제 7회 APNG Camp 참석차 다시 Taipei를 방문하게 되었다. 캠프 때에는 나의 친구이자 Creative Commons Taiwan의 운영을 맡고 있는 Jedi가 대만의 Blogosphere에 대해 재미있는 발표를 했다. CCL과 블로그 문화를 결합시킨 내용으로 Hybrid라는 키워드를 중심으로 Remix Culture에 대해 이야기했었다. (발표자료 보기) 발표를 들으면서 무척 재미있었지만 한편으로는 살짝 새침해지기도 했다. 한국보다 대만의 blogosphere가 훨씬 더 흥미로워보였던 것이다. Remix Culture는 거의 전지구적인 흐름인데, 왜 한국에서는 눈에 띄는 현상들이 많지 않을까?!

그야말로 대만에서는 너도나도 블로그를 운영하고, 또한 많은 사람들이 flickr를 즐기는 것으로 보인다. 심지어 블로그라는 이름은 online이 아니라 offline에서도 사용되고 있다. 콘도 프로젝트는 "거대 블로그"라 이름짓고, Taipei에 있는 어떤 아파트는 이름이 "MRT BLOG"라고 한다. (via 남쪽계단) offline에도 블로그를 짓는 셈이다. 너무 재밌어서 웃어야할지 말아야할지. MRT BLOG 관련 사진들을 보려면 이 곳으로. 대만의 유명 블로거이자 내 친구이기도 한 Schee의 Flickr이다. 어쨌든 콘도나 아파트 이름도 블로그라면, 블로그 광고조차 거의 필요없겠다. 그런데 어르신들도 BLOG라는 단어를 이해하신단 말인가?!

대만의 블로그 열풍에 대해서 이렇게 자세하게 언급한 이유는, 며칠 전 제 2회 TW Blogger BoF가 열린다는 소식을 접했기 때문이다. 블로거의 입장에서는 반가웠지만, 한국에서는 이런 행사가 지속적으로 열리기는 어렵다는 생각에 살짝 우울해졌다. 2004년 11월에 Blogging Culture in Transition이라는 주제로 Next Generation Forum을 열었을 때는 너무 이른 시기였다. 무르익지도 않았는데 offline에서 판을 벌렸던 것이다. 만약 올해 다시 기획한다면 다르게 해볼 수 있을 것 같다. 다행히도 한국에서는 라이브 블로그가 2회까지 열렸다. (행사 홈페이지 도메인은 만료된 듯.) 1회 때에는 많은 사람들이 모이지 않았지만, 올해 1월에 열린 2회 때에는 offline으로도 상당수의 사람들을 끌어내는 것에 성공했던 것으로 보인다. 한국의 Blogosphere도 충분히 성숙해가고 있다는 증거이다. 그렇다면 우리도 이 잠재력을 지속적으로 활용해 볼 가치가 있지 않을까.

내가 대만의 블로거들을 부러워하는 이유가 바로 이런 점들 때문이다. (1) 같은 동기와 목적을 가지고 함께 움직이는 사람들이 있다. (메인 기획자가 있지만, 그가 잘해서가 아니라 다른 블로거들과 teamwork이 좋아서 가능한 일이다.) (2) 고정적인 스폰서가 있다. 특히 TWNIC라는 공공기관이 직접적인 지원을 하고 있다. 이것은 매우매우 중요한 지점이고, 한국은 바로 이 부분에서 뒷받침이 되지 않고 있다. (3) 이 행사는 단순히 대만 내부의 블로거들끼리 뭉치는 것이 아니라 대만의 blogosphere를 해외로 알리는 역할을 하고 있다. 해외의 유명 IT 인사들이나 블로거들을 발표자로 초청하여 편하게 이야기를 나누는 시간을 갖고 토론을 하는 것이 행사의 주요 프로그램들 중 하나이므로, 서로 아이디어를 교환하는 좋은 경험을 갖게 되는 것이다. 혹시 블로거들을 대상으로 이런 행사를 개최하는 것이 뭐가 중요하냐고 반문하는 사람들도 있을지 모르겠다. 그러나 잠재적 가능성은 어떻게 활용하느냐에 따라 크게 달라지는 것이다. 블로거들이 인터넷 전반에 기여할 수 있는 몫은 매우 크다고 본다. 서로가 중요한 통찰을 나누고 그것을 각자의 자리에서 현실화시키는 것, 그것만으로도 이런 모임의 자리는 분명 필요하다. 딱딱한 강연이 아니라 BoF의 형태로, 그러면서도 내실있는 행사를 기획하는 것을 고민해 볼 일이다.

My 2nd Taipei experience


I came back to Seoul on 25th (from Taipei). It's a pity that I missed the farewell party in Taipei. I had to attend my graduation ceremony on 26th, so I couldn't help it. (So finally I got my M.A. degree on 26th!)
The APNG Camp is always scheduled for the time when APAN or APRICOT is held. This 7th APNG Camp was conjunct with APAN 2005. So I could also meet APAN people in Taipei. It was a good chance for me that I could get some brand new information. I wonder when next APNG Camp will be held, maybe with 22nd APAN in Singapore?!


In this camp, I could see several interesting presentations on the Internet environments (of the whole Asia-Pacific region). Frankly speaking, before this camp, I couldn't realize the digital divide. I mean, the problem is more serious than I guess. So it is a little difficult for me to explain the situaion in Korea: the cyberspace filled with offline metaphors, constant contact & full-time intimacy, lively chatting, the power of bloggers, and so much money that people spend on online decoration items.
Of course, there are other interesting presentations. The materials will be available sooner or later on the APNG Camp homepage. (In addition, my brother told me that he could use the live online streaming during the camp without any problems.)


I met some bloggers during the camp, especially Taiwanese bloggers and Indonesian bloggers. In this picture, my blogger friend Jedi is explaining about the hybrid culture of blogosphere in Taiwan. It is exciting that active bloggers are everywhere. ;) My Indonesian friend also introduced me to key bloggers of her country. I think the blog services in other countries are more interesting and diverse than those of Korea.


I have visited Taipei twice, and my Teipei experiences were very nice although I was there not for a sightseeing but for a work. I hope I can visit Taipei again WITHOUT the concern about work. I miss all of the people whom I met in Taipei...!

Off to Taipei for the 7th APNG Camp

I will fly to Taipei this morning for the 7th APNG Camp. I think I will not be able to sleep tonight, so now I'm worrying that I will be tired out tomorrow and during the camp. Writing this entry, I am suffering from terrible eyestrain, as always I am. Anyway I have to prepare some presentations... The 7th APNG Camp will be held in Taipei from August 23 to 25, in conjunction with the 20th APAN meeting. Young people from Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Pakistan, Thailand, Bangladesh, Phillipine, Sri Lanka, Russia, Mongolia and Nepal will discuss lots of general issues on Information and Communication Technologies. I think most speakers will deal with technological aspects, except of myself. however, there are some people who are interested in cultural issues (including my lovely friend, Rachel).

I will present three times:
1) On the Internet Culture in Korea (20 mins)
2) APNG KR Local Camp Report (20 mins)
3) Blog, the World of 'ME' (with Ching Chiao, 30 mins)
